The smell of fried rice and permanent markers filled the air as Project MotiVATe commenced our first study hall of the school year. A sea of new and old faces filled the office on a Wednesday night, all of them ready to start off the academic year right. We caught up on each other’s summer activities (some of which included trips to Europe and reading poetry at Common Ground) and played a birthday ice breaker in order to fill up our birthday board.
However, the fun didn’t end that night, as we had our first monthly event at the office on Saturday, September 21st. To celebrate the Vietnamese Lunar Moon Festival (Tết Trung Thu), the PM staff and mentees crafted origami lanterns, ate plenty of moon cakes and chè, and learned about the origin of the festival through traditional folk tale storytelling.
Not soon after, we did our big mentor-mentee pairing reveals and were successful at matching 17 mentors with mentees for the year. On October 2nd, we also hosted a packed house for parent night, when parents and mentors got to chat to learn more about one another.
With such a strong start, we’re looking forward to another great year with PM!
